Dieting Myths Revealed!

Dieting can be a struggle sometimes and having conflicting advice and make this struggle even worse.

After trying a few diets you may be inclined to believe some of the myths which can stop you in your track to proper weight loss.

So how do you separate the real gems from the myths? Well here I will expose a few of the myths so you won’t need to worry about it no more.

Fat gene

One of the biggest myths in weight loss and usually stop people from ever losing weight is the fat gene myth.  People believe they have the fat gene so they are unable to ever lose weight.

This is totally untrue. Not many people have the fat gene, it is extremely rare. It is very unlikely you would have inherited the fat gene from your parents and grand parents. Also if it is a gene then it must have been passed on from generation to generation. So why were people in the 1950’s so slim? And most likely your grandparents were slimmer than you.

So ditch the fat gene idea – it just won’t stick.

Eating salads can help you lose weight
Salads are fresh and healthy. They can provide you with proteins and most of the essential vitamins that your body needs to stay healthy. Eating just salad on its own can help you lose weight. However the problem arises when people add the dressing. It’s the fatty dressing that ruins all your effort of keeping the salad low fat. If you choose to use dressing then use it sparingly.

Skipping meals to lose weight

Skipping meals means you consume fewer calories. Instead of losing weight people who skip meals seem to gain weight even faster. When you skip meals can make you more hungry which can see you grabbing the nearest unhealthy chocolate bar or snack. People who skip meals tend to snack more and research has shown they are actually fatter than people who have 3-4 normal meals a day.

By skipping meals you will unconsciously slow down your metabolism. Your body will try to conserve more energy because it believes you are going through a starvation period and hold onto the precious calories that you feed your body.

The most important meal of the day is breakfast. Research has shown that people who skips breakfast tends to be overweight compared to people who eats breakfast. Think about it – your body has not had any food during the last 6-8 hours when you’re sleeping so when you wake up you should give it some energy otherwise your body would slow down your metabolism resulting in a uphill struggle to lose weight.

Eating Late?
Contrary to belief eating late at night does not affect your weight loss. A cake eaten at 10pm will have the same calories as a cake eaten at 3pm.

It does not matter what time you eat because a calorie is a calorie. You just need to remember if you eat 200 calories then you’ll need to use up the energy through exercise or physical activity to expend it otherwise you will gain weight.

It’s a very simple equation you just need to eat less and move more to lose weight.

Do slim people have a higher metabolism?

This myth is one I hear all the time. It may seem that slim people must have a higher level of metabolism because you may have slim friends that eat a lot but never seem to gain any weight. Total nonsense! In actual fact an overweight person actually uses more calories compared to a slim person. A person weighing 16 stones would use twice as much calories compared to a person 8 stones

Most likely the difference lays in the eating habits and quantities a slim person eats that keep them slim. And maybe they are burning more calories because of extra physical activities they do but you didn’t know about.

Focusing only your diet and not the exercise can help you lose weight
No no no. You must focus on both your diet and the level of your physical activity to really lose weight and keep it off long term. It’s just like trying to walk with one leg – it’s possible but why make life hard for yourself.

You will lose weight faster if you combine diet along side extra physical activity. Remember it’s the little extra bits of physical activity which really adds up over the long run and remember to stay motivated and be consistent in your approach.

Eating more fibre can help you lose more weight

Fibre has no calories. A high fibre diet can really help your bowels and keep them working properly. However you must remember it’s the amount of calories that you consume that makes you gain weight. Eating more fibre can help fill you up quicker and could help you eat less calories, as a result you could lose weight with a high fibre diet.
